Matteo Renzi
TBI Strategic Counsellor & Former Prime Minister of Italy
Matteo Renzi was formerly prime minister of Italy and leader of the country’s Democratic Party (PD) before going on to form the centrist party Italia Viva. He joined the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change in June 2024 as a strategic counsellor and works with colleagues across TBI’s portfolio of countries advising political leaders on their reform programmes. He has long been a proponent of pursuing digitalisation as a central part of domestic reform in Italy, introducing digital ID into key public services and extensive measures to modernise public administration. Prior to this, he was mayor of Florence, where some of his successes included cutting public-sector excess spending and installing 500 WiFi access points.
