Sam Sharps, Executive Director of Policy at TBI, said:
“Today’s announcements must be the first step in a fundamental reimagining of the way government operates.
“Our research shows that up to £1 billion a year and 40% of civil servant time could be saved by the DWP alone by properly deploying new technology like AI. If we get this right, we can get away from endless demands for more tax and spend, in favour of a government that works. But that will also mean taking tough decisions to fuel investment now. Cutting NHS England is exactly the sort of decisive action needed.
“The government must now build the infrastructure needed for effective delivery. Coupling AI with a Digital ID and a National Data Library would equip civil servants with the tools needed for data-driven, personalised, and proactive delivery.
“The Civil Service was designed for a different world. What it needs is not just reform and modernisation, but transformation. This means more specialists and a more dynamic system, with technology taking way more of the strain.”
