TBI comment on King’s Speech

News17th July 2024

Comment from Sam Sharps, TBI Executive Director of Policy:

Today’s announcements tackle the most urgent issues and lay the groundwork for delivering the government’s agenda. Among the proposals, setting the right tone on AI regulation is vital, and the signs are that the government is looking to strike the right balance between caution and dynamism.

To move Britain beyond its low-growth, low-investment, high-taxation economy, AI must be treated as more than a standalone issue: it must run right through health, education, crime prevention, industrial strategy and the transition to net zero. The country needs new pools of capital, with pension reform offering a route to this. Britain must also get building again: planning is rightly being unlocked, and key to this is a bold new model that introduces clear processes and guidelines, and uses the power of data and technology to fast-track development.

The new prime minister has already shown that he is prepared to take bold and decisive action. Today’s announcements demonstrate the ambition of the government.
